Tanzania
Tanzania’s ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the opposition Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) are set to hold a political dialogue in a bid to thaw frosty relations between the country’s main political players.
Their meeting comes against a backdrop of escalating political tension with many opposition officials having been warned or dragged to court for various reasons related to the ban on rallies in the past few months.
Tanzania’s main opposition parties had called for nationwide rallies to protest against the government’s decision to ban live televised parliamentary debates.
They said that bans on rallies are discriminatory and contrary to the country’s Constitution of which leaders had sworn to protect.
The Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance held meeting with both Secretary generals of both parties to come up with names of those who will form part of the dialogue.
